Meta Settles Kentucky School District Lawsuit Days Before Trial, as 1,200 Cases Remain Pending
Meta has reached a settlement with a Kentucky school district just weeks before the case was due to go to trial in California, according to court documents. The lawsuit alleged that Meta, Snap, YouTube, and TikTok had damaged students’ mental health, placing significant strain on school resources.
The settlement follows a similar resolution reached one week earlier by Snap, YouTube, and TikTok in the same case. The Kentucky lawsuit was the first among more than 1,200 school district cases filed across the United States to be scheduled for trial.
A Statement of Reassurance, Not Accountability
“We’ve resolved this case amicably and remain focused on our longstanding work to build protections like Teen Accounts that help teens stay safe online, while giving parents simple controls to support their families,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
The company did not admit liability. Financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed in court documents.
Mounting Legal Pressure
Meta faces an expanding legal front over its platforms’ impact on young users. A Los Angeles jury recently ruled against Meta and YouTube in a separate trial concerning social media addiction — a case that included testimony from Mark Zuckerberg and other senior executives.
In a further blow, Meta was ordered to pay a $375 million fine following a trial in New Mexico focused on the company’s child safety practices. Meta has said it intends to appeal that ruling.
The decision to settle the Kentucky case before trial appears consistent with a strategy to limit high-profile courtroom exposure at a moment of acute reputational and legal vulnerability.
Broader Litigation Continues
Lawyers representing the Kentucky school district said the settlement would not slow the wider legal effort. Their focus, they stated, “remains on pursuing justice for the remaining 1,200 school districts who have filed cases.”
Active lawsuits against Meta and other social media companies are ongoing in New York, Seattle, and across multiple jurisdictions, with no comprehensive resolution in sight.
