South West Water Fined Record £1.85m After Parasite Contaminates Drinking Supply in Devon

South West Water has been handed a record £1.85 million fine for a drinking water offence after admitting it supplied water contaminated with a parasite to thousands of residents in south Devon in May 2024, leaving some with life-changing illnesses.

The fine, the largest ever imposed for such an offence in the United Kingdom, followed the company’s admission that it had delivered water unfit for human consumption through its network.

How the Contamination Occurred

A parasite entered the water supply through a damaged pipe, according to findings presented in court. The district judge presiding over the case ruled that South West Water had committed a “serious failure” to protect public health.

The scale of the contamination and the severity of its consequences for affected residents formed the basis of the record penalty.

Lasting Health Consequences

Among those affected, some residents sustained life-changing illnesses as a direct result of consuming the contaminated supply. The full extent of the health impact on the wider affected population has not been disclosed.

South West Water serves customers across Devon and Cornwall and is one of the United Kingdom’s privatised regional water utilities.
