BBC Seeks Trump’s Tax Returns in £3.7 Billion Defamation Battle Over Capitol Attack Broadcast

The BBC is demanding access to Donald Trump’s tax returns and financial records as it mounts its defence against a £3.7 billion defamation lawsuit filed by the US president in Florida, in a legal confrontation that could expose the inner workings of his global business empire.

The Lawsuit

Trump is suing the British broadcaster over a Panorama segment he claims contained a misleading edit of his speech delivered on 6 January 2021, the day of the attack on the US Capitol. He alleges the BBC defamed him and violated Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.

The BBC denies all claims.

What the BBC Is Demanding

BBC lawyers are seeking Trump’s personal tax returns alongside financial records from his extensive real estate and media holdings. The requested documents span companies registered in Bali, Hungary, Vietnam, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The broadcaster’s legal team argues the records are necessary to scrutinise Trump’s claim that the broadcast caused “direct harm to his professional and occupational interests.” In a court filing, lawyers stated: “Plaintiff put his financial condition at issue the moment he filed this case.”

What Is at Stake

If a court grants the BBC’s request, the disclosure could provide an unprecedented look into Trump’s personal wealth — financial information he has historically resisted making public.

Trump’s legal team has pushed back, characterising the BBC’s demands as a “fishing expedition.” A judge must now rule on the scope of financial records the broadcaster will be permitted to access.
