Gunman Kills One at Ecuador’s Guayaquil Airport in Suspected Targeted Assassination
A gunman shot and killed one man and wounded another at the international arrivals area of José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Wednesday, June 17, in what authorities believe was a premeditated assassination.
Attack at the Arrivals Terminal
The victim, believed to have been the primary target, had just landed at the airport when he was shot. His wife was present during the attack, according to early accounts.
A second individual was wounded and transported to hospital for emergency treatment. Video footage and witness accounts circulating on social media described a “heavy shootout” inside the terminal.
Two Suspects Detained
A source from Ecuador’s Ministry of the Interior confirmed to local outlet PRIMICIAS that two suspects were apprehended in the airport’s car park shortly after the shooting.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim or disclosed a motive, though officials characterised the attack as a deliberate, targeted strike.
Context: State of Emergency Declared
The shooting occurred less than 24 hours after the Ecuadorian government declared a state of emergency across 10 provinces in response to a surge in gang-related violence and organised crime.
Ecuador has experienced a sharp escalation in criminal violence in recent years, with armed groups linked to transnational drug trafficking increasingly operating in urban centres and public spaces.
