Car Plunges from Bridge onto M8 Motorway Near Glasgow

Two women were taken to hospital on Tuesday evening after a car left Renfrew Road and fell from a bridge onto the M8 motorway near Glasgow Airport, prompting police to close the westbound carriageway and divert traffic through local roads in Paisley and Renfrew.

Police Scotland reported the incident at approximately 20:40, closing the motorway westbound at junction 27, near Paisley. The carriageway reopened by midnight, as did Renfrew Road, which had been shut due to structural damage sustained by the bridge barrier between the Abbotsinch Retail Park roundabout and the Arkleston Road roundabout.

Images from the scene showed a heavily damaged barrier on Renfrew Road cordoned off by officers, while the closed section of the M8 bore visible oil splatter on the road surface beneath the bridge — physical evidence consistent with a vehicle falling from height onto the carriageway below.

Traffic Scotland confirmed that drivers were diverted off the motorway onto local routes during the closure, generating significant tailbacks around the crash site. Officers said inquiries remain ongoing and urged motorists to avoid the area while investigations continue.
